Come check out this free event. The author of Clam Gardens relates a narrative concerning the recent revealing of - and the search for acceptance for - the widespread existence of ancient aboriginal mariculture on the Pacific Northwest Coast. Williams will describe being sent by Klahoose elder Elizabeth Harry (Keekus) to see the clam gardens from Powell River to Fitz Hugh sound near Bella Bella. She will detail the seven year refusal by archeological authorities to acknowledge the native testimony of Elizabeth Harry and Chief Adam Dick, as well as that of geomorpholgist Dr. John Harper, regarding clam garden usage. Williams will discuss how her book Clam Gardens concludes with the August 2004 acceptance of pre-historic clam cultivation by senior archeologist Dr. Don Mitchell and tis questioning of the role of archeologist Franz Boas in suppression of information on native cultivation and ownership of newly researched land and sea gardens.
