On June 1st 2007 Smart Growth BC will be hosting our fourth annual conference to bring together land use professionals, developers, government staff and elected officials. Building Complete Communities: Developers Leading the Way will be held at the beautiful Marriott Pinnacle in the heart of downtown Vancouver near Stanley Park. The event will focus on exploring the newest policies, technologies, and strategies for creating affordable, energy-efficient, walkable neighbourhoods in British Columbia.
To begin the day, John Knott, President and CEO of the Noisette Company, will give the keynote presentation on the world-renowned Noisette sustainable community project in South Carolina (http://www.noisettesc.com). Noisette is a 3,000 acre ‘city-within-a-city’ located in North Charleston, South Carolina. This site is targeted for integrated restoration as a sustainable community and involves the preservation of historic architectural styles, neighbourhood diversity and the area’s unique social fabric.
Smart Growth BC will be hosting our second annual Smart Growth Awards during a luncheon gala ceremony to celebrate excellence in innovative development in B.C. Registration includes a ticket to the awards luncheon as well as a glass of wine at the post-conference networking session. Alternatively, luncheon tickets may be purchased separately. After the awards ceremony, afternoon technical break-out session topics will include tools for overcoming policy hurdles, getting small development projects to contribute to a larger community vision, and examples of well-received density in rural, mid-sized, and large communities. A wine networking session will round out the day.
Smart Growth BC has earned respect as a voice for the creation of healthy, livable communities across the province. Our research, outreach and implementation programs, such as Smart Growth on the Ground and the Community Assistance Program, have assisted citizens in dozens of communities around the province in moving smart growth from theory to practice. Our previous conferences - Creating Prosperous, Livable Communities in 2004, Financing Smart Growth in 2005, and Innovations in Smart Growth Housing in 2006, demonstrated the professional, solutions-oriented events we offer.
