While these programs exist to make your home more energy efficient, they also offer financial incentives and energy savings that result in saving money in the long run.

All of these programs are about using less resources and producing less air pollution and greenhouse gases. That means more breathing room for all of us.


EnerGuide for Houses Program

You can qualify for a $1500 Energy Savings Plan grant (plus other incentives shown below) for energy efficiency improvements to your home if you obtain an EnerGuide for Houses evaluation and complete some of the recommended energy efficiency improvements.  Funding is limited and is FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED!  Have a pre-renovation EnerGuide evaluation completed before you start your home energy improvements to qualify for this grant.

$350 High Efficiency Furnace Rebate

Starting Sept 1, 2005, until Dec 31, 2006, Terasen Gas is offering a $350 incentive for any homeowner that installs a high efficiency furnace with variable speed fan.

Building a New Home?

Terasen Gas, BC Hydro and the Province are offering up to $3000 for new energy efficient homes built to Energuide80 standards.  make sure your builder knows about it.  Click here for details.

VanCity Bright Ideas Financing

Get a low-interest renovation loan (at prime rate) from $3,500-$20,000 and have up to seven years to pay it back.  To qualify, your post-renovation EnerGuide for Houses evaluation must show a five-point rating increase in your home's energy efficiency.

Or undertake a similar energy efficiency renovation as above and pay with a re-advance on your mortgage, a VanCity line of credit or your VanCity VISA card and receive $170 cashback.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)
Mortgage Insurance Refund and 35 Year Amortization

CMHC offers a 10% premium refund on its mortgage loan insurance premiums, as well as extended amortization to a maximum of 35 years, to individuals who use CMHC-insured financing to purchase an energy efficient home, purchase a home and make energy-saving renovations, or renovate their existing home to make it more energy efficient.  For more information, visit CMHC, call 1-800-668-2642, or visit your local financial institution.

B.C. Hydro Power Smart

Energy Star Windows Rebate

BC Hydro Power Smart is offering its customers a rebate worth $1.00 for every square foot of Energy Star windows that they install.  Energy Star windows help keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter, reduce your heating costs, help block outside noise, and protect your valuables from sun damage and fading.  Click here for details!    

Fridge Buy-Back Program

BC Hydro will pick up, free-of-charge, your old, inefficient, second refrigerator and give you a $30 payment.  Eligible fridges must measure between 10 and 24 cubic feet and still be in working condition.  There is a maximum of two refrigerators per customer account. This offer is available to all B.C. Hydro customers.

Tax Exemptions

Tax savings are available on efficient furnaces, boilers and heat pumps (85% seasonal efficiency or higher), insulation, storm windows, storm doors, weather stripping, caulking, window insulating systems, separate multi-glazed windows and doors (including garage doors) containing multi-glazed windows.  Taxes are taken off at time of purchase.

City of Vancouver Water Saver Kits

The City of Vancouver is offering water saver kits to Vancouver residents (retail value of $30 to $40)!for only $12!

Indoor water saver kits include a shower flow rate tester, low flow shower head, tap aerators, and a toilet tank displacement bag.  The low flow shower alone could save a family of three nearly $200/year in utility costs for heating the water.

Outdoor water saver kits include:

one heavy-duty water gun with an eight-pattern spray head
one mechanical water timer with automatic shut-off
six hose washers to prevent leakage around hose guns, timers and sprinklers
two sprinkler gauges which monitor moisture on lawns and plants.

It is estimated that each of these kits can help residents save 21 cubic meters of water per year.

Get them at the Client Service Centre on the main floor of Vancouver City Hall at 453 West 12th Avenue.  Please bring proof of residency.  Each household may buy up to two kits while quantities last.
